EMP Orb

All of the rockets used in Rocket Dog races, from the common Atomic Bolt to the rare Sonic Scramjet and Raging Bull, are heavily dependent upon electronics…and that makes them vulnerable to an EMP blast.

The EMP Orb is a cylindrical grenade. Inside is an ultra-high density power source (a cluster of small gyroscopic masses, each spinning at nearly the limit where centrifugal force would tear them apart), a coil of wire, and a very small explosive charge, not much bigger than an Earth firecracker. When the grenade is tossed, electromagnetic breaks kick in, and cause the gyroscopic masses to slow…and dump their energy into an electric charge in the coil of wire. Once the wire is fully charged with the EM field, the firecracker charge detonates, starting at one end of the coil. As the coil itself breaks apart, the EM field is crushed into a smaller and smaller segment of wire, until finally the coil is entirely blown apart and the energy is released as an EMP blast disabling all nearby rockets!
