Basenji

The Toba Rocket Dog trainers noted something interesting about Basenji: whereas most hounds, when they’re tracking a person, another dog, or a wild animal, will get louder and louder as they narrow the gap, Basenji tend to get quieter and more focused. Often a Basenji, when it’s near its target, will slow and even stop, all the better to focus its eyes, ears, and especially its nose on the quarry.

Can this skill be used in a Rocket Dogs race? It seems likely – if you’re the proud handler of a Basenji, just wait until your dog is close to the leader in a race and notice how the already skilled tracker becomes even more perceptive and agile!
